What is the Exotherme laser?

The Exotherme laser is used for spider veins and fine veins. Laser energy is directed at the vein through the skin, heating and closing the vein wall. Because it targets the veins as if erasing them, it is also known as the “eraser laser”.

How is it done?

  • The area is cleaned; local numbing is used if needed
  • The laser is directed at the target veins through the skin
  • Sessions are usually short; a cold compress may be applied
  • A compression stocking may be advised

Who is it for?

It is considered for fine spider veins on the legs and elsewhere. If there is underlying venous insufficiency it is treated first, so Doppler ultrasound may be advised beforehand. Skin type and vein colour affect the choice of method.

Aftercare

Temporary redness, mild swelling or discolouration may occur. Several sessions may be needed depending on the number of veins.

  • Protect the treated area from the sun for a while
  • Avoid hot baths and saunas for a short time
  • Attend follow-up appointments

Frequently asked questions

How many sessions does the eraser laser need?

It depends on how widespread and what colour the veins are; some patients need several sessions.

Can I return to daily life after the laser?

Most patients return to daily life after the procedure; follow your doctor’s advice.

How does the eraser laser differ from sclerotherapy?

The laser works with heat through the skin, sclerotherapy with medication injected into the vein. The choice depends on the vein; they are sometimes combined.
