Which doctor treats varicose veins?
Assessing and treating varicose veins and other vein conditions is part of cardiovascular surgery. If you have heaviness, swelling, night cramps, visible veins or skin discolouration in your legs, you can see a cardiovascular surgeon.
For sudden swelling and pain in one leg, breathlessness or chest pain, do not wait for an appointment: go to the nearest emergency department or call 112.
Preparing for your appointment
Your symptoms and medical history are discussed first, followed by a standing examination. If needed, the veins are examined with colour Doppler ultrasound on the same day.
- Wear comfortable clothing that lets your legs be uncovered easily
- Bring a list of your medicines
- Bring any previous ultrasound, test or surgery reports
- Mention any previous vein treatment or blood clots
- Tell your doctor if you might be pregnant
- Do not apply cream or oil to your legs before the visit
On the day
Arriving a little before your appointment makes registration easier. The length of the examination and ultrasound depends on the area assessed. Once a diagnosis is made, treatment options, the process and what to keep in mind are discussed with you.
After treatment
After methods applied from inside the vein, most patients walk home the same day. Mild tenderness, bruising or tightness may occur and usually fades over time.
- Wear compression stockings for the recommended period
- Walk regularly and avoid long periods of inactivity
- Avoid hot baths, saunas and heavy exercise in the first days
- Attend the planned follow-up visits
- Seek help promptly for severe pain, marked swelling, fever or breathlessness
