Why is it done?
Colour Doppler ultrasound uses sound waves to image the vessels and show blood flow in colour. It is used to assess valve failure (reflux), clots and blockages in the veins. The choice of treatment relies largely on its findings.
How is it done?
For varicose vein assessment the examination is done standing. Gel is applied and the probe is moved along the leg to examine the veins from groin to ankle. Gentle pressure on the calf may be used to check valve function. It is non-invasive; no needles, medication or radiation are used.
What to know beforehand
- Usually no special preparation is needed
- Comfortable clothing that lets the legs be uncovered easily is helpful
- Bring any previous test results and a list of your medicines
