How foam sclerotherapy is performed

In foam sclerotherapy a sclerosing agent mixed with air into a foam is injected into the varicose vein through a fine needle, and the vein seals from inside. A compression stocking is worn afterwards.

What is foam sclerotherapy?

In sclerotherapy a sclerosing agent that irritates the inner vein wall is injected into the vein through a fine needle. In foam sclerotherapy the agent is mixed with air to form a foam that contacts a larger surface inside the vein, so it may be preferred for larger veins.

How is it done?

The vein is accessed with a millimetre-thin needle, under ultrasound if needed, and the foam is injected. The treated vein sticks together, closes and is absorbed within a few weeks. A compression stocking is applied afterwards.

Frequently asked questions
