The principle
In endovenous laser ablation (EVLA) a thin laser fibre is placed inside the varicose vein under ultrasound guidance. Laser energy heats the inner surface of the vein and closes it; blood continues to flow through healthy veins.
When is it considered?
It may be considered for patients with symptoms and reflux in the great or small saphenous vein on Doppler ultrasound. Suitability depends on vein diameter, course and general health.
The process
It is performed under local anaesthesia and usually needs no hospital stay. Compression stockings and regular walking are advised afterwards. Temporary tenderness and bruising along the treated vein may occur.
