What are spider veins?
Spider veins are small veins near the skin that widen and become visible as red, purple or blue lines. They mostly appear on the legs.
Why do they appear?
Inherited tendency, hormonal changes, pregnancy, standing for long periods and age can play a role. In some people they may be a sign of underlying venous insufficiency.
Assessment and treatment
Before treatment, Doppler ultrasound may be used to check for underlying venous insufficiency. Sclerotherapy or laser applied through the skin can be considered; today these are performed as outpatient procedures.
